The Miracle of Christmas

The greatest series of supernatural events ever seen on earth began with the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Miracles surrounded Christ’s birth and continued throughout His earthly ministry to bear abundant testimony that “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54).
The Miracle of ChristmasDuring this busy Christmas season, let’s pause for a moment to examine the supernatural life of Jesus Christ and to be amazed by God’s supernatural love for all people.
Jesus Christ was born of a virgin; He had no earthly father. A multitude of angels announced His birth, and a miraculous star led wise men from the east to worship Him.
During His ministry, Jesus worked miracles of healing, of creation, of controlling nature, of casting out demons, and of bringing dead people back to life.
When Jesus willingly died on the cross for our sins, an unnatural midday darkness shrouded the earth, an earthquake shook the ground, and the veil in the temple ripped from top to bottom.
Three days later Jesus arose from the dead, just as He had promised. Later, Jesus ascended bodily from the earth and returned to Heaven while His disciples watched.
So in addition to Jesus’ supernatural birth, He lived a supernatural life, died a supernatural death, arose from the dead, and returned to Heaven, all by supernatural power. Jesus was not just an ordinary man. Jesus Christ was, and is, the eternal God. (Read more about these miracles in the New Testament of the Bible.)
Why, then, did Jesus leave the glory of Heaven to be born in Bethlehem and eventually to die on the cross? It was all because of God’s supernatural love for mankind, a love that extends far beyond any human love. The Bible explains that, “For a good man some [people] would even dare to die. But God commendeth [demonstrates] His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8).
Without that rescuing love, none of us would have any hope of salvation. We are all sinners—“There is none righteous, no, not one”—and the punishment for sin is death (Romans 3:10, 6:23). We cannot save ourselves by good deeds or devout living, for “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” in God’s sight (Isaiah 64:6).
Therefore, God provided His Son, Jesus Christ, to bear the punishment of our sins in His own body on the cross. Trusting in Christ’s sacrifice for us is the only way that we can find peace with God and entrance to Heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your own personal Savior from sin and its consequences, won’t you do it now? The Bible promises that “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Bow your head in prayer, admitting to God that you are a sinner and that you are ready to turn from your way to His way. Thank God for sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross and rise again so that you can have eternal life. Ask Him to forgive you and make you new. Trust His promise of salvation, and rejoice in knowing Him as your Savior and Lord!
You can grow in your relationship with God by communicating with Him each day through Bible reading and prayer, attending a Bible-teaching church, and sharing the good news of God’s love with others.
The most amazing miracle of Christmas is God’s demonstration of His supernatural love for all people through the Lord Jesus Christ. May His love fill your heart with peace and joy this Christmas and always.

Will You Be Surprised?

We get surprised when things come upon us unexpectedly. Many things that occur in our lives come without warning. Sometimes things like sickness, bills and family crises just cannot be anticipated. Even our own death can come by surprise. What comes after death, however, is something that does not need to be a surprise for anyone. It is not God’s desire that you be surprised after you die. He tells us in the Bible that every one of us will live somewhere forever. To be prepared for life after death, we must first examine what we believe about this matter in the light of God’s word.
Do you think a person stops existing after death?
Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” The word “after” tells us that life does not end with death. No matter what you think will happen when you die, God says that His judgment will follow. If you are anticipating “nothing” after death, you will be surprised!
Do you think God would never send you to hell?
Psalm 5:4 says, “You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You.” Because God is holy, He must punish sin. Sin cannot be where God is. We are all sinners. If a person’s sin is not cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, God must send him to hell: “Anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). If you think no one goes to hell, you will be surprised!
Do you think being good will get you to heaven?
Isaiah 64:6 says, “we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses [good deeds] are like filthy rags.” Being a good person is not enough to make us acceptable to God. We are still filthy sinners. In God’s eyes, “There is none who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:12). Sin means “missing the mark.” We have all missed God’s mark even though we may do many good things. If you think a person’s goodness gets him to heaven, you will be surprised!
Do you think hell will be just a big party?
Matthew 13:50 says that the wicked will be cast “into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” A furnace of fire, wailing, and gnashing of teeth do not paint the picture of a party atmosphere. In reality, hell will be filled with only suffering and anguish. Luke 16:22-23 tells of a man who “died and was buried” and was immediately “in torments in Hades.” If you think there will be any pleasure in hell, you will be surprised!
Do you put off thinking about death and eternity, hoping it will just “turn out well”?
John 3:18 says, “He who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” The person who has not trusted in Jesus Christ is in peril of eternal condemnation already! “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3). These matters are too important to leave unconsidered. Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross to pay the punishment that you deserve. The resurrection of Christ is proof that God accepted His payment for sin. If you do not receive Jesus Christ as your Savior, you will be surprised!
If you have never responded to God’s offer of salvation, call out to the Lord Jesus Christ to save you now. Come to Him as a needy sinner and put your faith and trust in Him today. He will save you by His amazing grace! You might express your heart to God in a prayer like this:
“Dear God, I realize that I am a sinner and I deserve your judgment. I believe Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. I trust Him alone for my salvation.”
If you have turned to God in repentance and put your trust in Jesus Christ, the Bible says you are now a child of God (John 1:12), saved (Romans 10:9), and have eternal life (John 10:28). Because God says so, you are now ready for what comes after death. You will not be surprised! —Steven Lyon

Amazing Grace

John Newton, the author of this famous hymn, is an amazing testament to God's saving grace. Born in England in 1725, he was raised by a godly mother until she died just before he turned seven. Because his father was a sailor who spent most of his time on long voyages at sea, John's next few years were unhappily spent at boarding school and in the custody of his step-mother.
On his eleventh birthday, John Newton's father introduced him to the sailor's life, and they made several voyages together during his early teenage years. John was treated well, but he was surrounded by poor role models. Later, John would write in his autobiography: "I am persuaded that my father loved me, though he seemed not willing that I should know it." One of the ways the elder Newton cared for his son was in using his connections to secure job opportunities for him. These, however, were repeatedly squandered as distractions and a penchant for mischief led John to one disappointing end after another.
During his rebellious teenage years, John Newton became a self-described "slave to every customary vice," whose actions were "exceedingly vile." It wasn't long until he adopted a philosophy that denied the existence of God. This brought some rest to his troubled conscience, because if God didn't exist, then there would be no judgment for his sins either. He took much pleasure in converting as many people as possible to his godless theology by ridiculing and blaspheming their faith.
But even though he tried to forget about God, God did not forget about John Newton, and preserved his life on many occasions. Once he was only minutes late for a boat which overturned, drowning all of the passengers. Another time he was thrown from a horse and landed just short of being impaled on sharpened stakes. Some of these dramatic brushes with death caused John to consider the possibility that God was watching over him, and he even made several failed attempts at reforming his life.
A series of circumstances, including forced military service, desertion, capture, demotion, and transfer to the crew of a slave ship, eventually left John nearly dead from malaria and brutally mistreated by slave traders in Africa. Eventually, John was found by a ship captain who, at his father's request, was looking for John to bring him home. God, the heavenly father, was also seeking John Newton, and was about to get his attention.
During the long trip back to England, he was awakened one night by a violent storm which was ripping the ship apart. He briefly went below deck, and the man who took his place was washed overboard. John cried out, "the Lord have mercy on us!" As the sailors attempted to save the battered ship, John began to seriously consider his life in light of the Bible. He recollects: "I concluded at first that my sins were too great to be forgiven."
In time, however, as John Newton learned more of the amazing grace of God, he "began to understand the security of the covenant of grace, and to expect to be preserved, not by my own power and holiness, but by the mighty power and promise of God through faith in an unchangeable Saviour."
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
   And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
   The hour I first believed!
This same "amazing grace" of God that saved John Newton is available to sinners today. Like him, you might think that your sins are too great and too many to be forgiven. Or, you may not yet understand that "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Either way, God's Word teaches us that we are slaves of sin (John 8:34), and that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Like John Newton discovered, trying to live a better life is powerless; self-reform is hopeless. You and I need a Saviour.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God (John 3:16) is the One we need. He lived a perfect life and then died as a guiltless sacrifice for sin (1 Peter 1:18-21). His gift of forgiveness and everlasting life is offered to all who will repent of their sins and put their trust in Him. Salvation is offered through God's grace, and accepted by faith: "For by grace are ye saved through faith" (Ephesians 2:8). Will you turn to God and take advantage of His amazing grace today?
