PEOPLE OF TRUTH

We live in a culture of lies. The devil is the father of all lies and this world is filled with a web of lies. When it comes to life in general, people expect to be told lies. We anticipate it at the car dealership, in the world of sales, and certainly in the world of politics.

In 1988, Gary Hart was the man to beat in the presidential campaign. He was smart, charismatic, and he possessed a political savvy that enabled him to answer key questions with clarity. However, a story was told that he was committing adultery on his wife and it spread like wildfire. Gary Hart insisted that it was a lie. He even said the following, “Follow me around. I don’t care. I’m serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They’ll be very bored.” Sure enough, the media did follow him around and soon enough they found him with his mistress on a boat named, “Monkey Business.” Gary Hart was mixed up in a web of lies. Those lies ruined his chance to be president and left deep scars on his personal life.

In Jesus’ sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:33–37), we find Him spotlighting the loopholes of the Jews who would swear by all sorts of things other than God Himself in order to provide an opportunity to break their oath. They had arranged a system of deceit, filled with loopholes, in order to avoid breaking Leviticus 19:12 which reads, “You shall not swear by My name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.” So, they would swear by Heaven because that sounded spiritual. They would swear by the earth because that sounded big. They would swear by Jerusalem because that sounded official. They would even swear by their own head, because that sounded sacred. It was all a scheme and Jesus knew it. So, He confronted that in His sermon and said, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil” (Matthew 5:37).

One of the clearest marks of a Christian is that he or she is marked by truth. The Scriptures reveal that Jesus is the truth (John 14:6) and that the devil is the father of all lies (John 8:44). In a more sobering warning, Jesus stated the following, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36–37). The fact is, when we see a list of vile sinners such as murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, and idolaters—we likewise see liars included in that list of people who will not be welcomed into Heaven and who will be sent to Hell (Revelation 21:8).

Tell the truth. Be marked by truth. The only way this is possible is to have a life that is transformed by Jesus Christ. When you are born again, you have a new heart with new motives. Suddenly, your old deceitful loophole schemes violate your conscience in a way that they never did before. Living honestly will also spare you from many of the consequences of lying—ruined marriages, broken relationships, failed jobs, and a tarnished reputation. Submit to Jesus, walk in the light, and tell the truth for the glory of God.

True Peace

Perhaps true peace seems impossible amid the stress of financial decisions, the flurry of the holiday season, and the pressures of gift-buying. Maybe the thought of finding true, inner peace seems hopeless when everything is so busy and stressful. As hopeless as it may seem, the Bible tells us how to gain peace. It also tells us what stands in the way of gaining true peace.

NO PEACE

God says twice, “‘There is no peace,’ says the Lord, ‘for the wicked’” (Isaiah 48:22; 57:21). You may say, “But I am not wicked!” You are probably a very nice person. Perhaps you try to read and follow the Bible. You may be a member of a local church. Perhaps you were baptized as a child. These are all good things, but they do not relieve your lack of peace, because they do not cure your sin problem. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). God says, “We are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). We are ALL wicked in God’s sight and thus we have no peace.

We lack peace because our sin separates us from God. “Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). If not dealt with, your sin will lead you to eternal damnation when you die. “Anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

THE GIVER OF PEACE

“Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ—the Prince of PEACE. Peace with God can only come through humble trust in Jesus. “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

Because we cannot solve our sin problem, Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, came to earth to take the punishment for our sin. He lived a perfect life and died for you. Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” 1 Peter 3:18 states, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 15:3,4
explains that “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day.” Christ died and rose again for YOU! You can have eternal life and true peace through Him.

WILL YOU ACCEPT THE GIFT?

Christmas is also a time of gift-giving. A true gift is one that comes with no strings attached. It is given out of love. Eternal life is a gift, not something that you can purchase or earn. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).

God offers you His free gift of salvation. Salvation is available to you if you are willing to humbly acknowledge your sinful condition before God (repent) and, in your heart, turn from sin to Christ. Mark 1:15 says, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Romans 10:9,13 say, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved…. For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

Will you humbly accept the gift of salvation this Christmas season? Ask Him to save you. If you willingly turn to Him, Jesus promises His true and lasting peace to comfort your soul. “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27).

EMPTY

THE EMPTY CROSS

Arriving at Golgotha that evening, I was overcome with a sense of emptiness. The area was completely deserted, but three blood-stained crosses at the top of the hill served as solemn reminders of the events of the day.

Less than a week earlier, Jesus of Nazareth entered the city with His disciples and many others proclaiming Him as Messiah, our long-awaited Savior. We were full of hope, because He was clearly a teacher sent by God with the power to work miracles—healing, feeding, and even raising people from the grave!

But then, the one who we thought would bring salvation was dead. It all happened so quickly; one day He was teaching His followers, and the next He was on trial and condemned to death by crucifixion. Even the execution was rushed, as the soldiers used a spear to ensure that He was dead before the day was over.

The empty cross, and the emptiness in my heart, both testified to one fact—Jesus died.

THE EMPTY TOMB

Three days later, some of His followers went to the tomb, found it empty, and returned with amazing news—He was alive! For the next forty days, He continued to teach and encourage His disciples, appearing first to one, then two, then eleven—and eventually more than five hundred of us at once!

Jesus had predicted that He would suffer, die, and rise again, but we just couldn’t comprehend the beauty of God’s divine plan to redeem our souls. When He said, “I lay down My life that I may take it again,” we didn’t realize what He meant at the time.

But now, looking back on these events, I see how the empty cross testifies of His love, and the empty tomb declares His mighty power. God’s Word says:

 • “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us” (1 John 3:16).

 • “[Jesus was] declared to be the Son of God with power … by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4).

YOUR RESPONSE?

Jesus took our sins upon Himself—suffered and died in our place—so we can be forgiven. There on the cross, He cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). The empty cross tells us that the work is done, the price has been paid, and the door to Heaven stands open.

The empty tomb demonstrates that Jesus won the victory over sin and death. Listen to His words: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live” (John 11:25).

Jesus now offers salvation to all mankind. If we reject Him, we must stand before God and be judged for our sins—“cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

But if we admit that we are sinners, turn to God, and put our trust in Jesus Christ, we will find forgiveness and eternal life. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved … For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved’” (Romans 10:9,13).
