Praying For Our Nation

As I write this it is 10:30pm the night before the inauguration. My heart is heavy as I see what the next administration is planning. It is frightening to see the narrative congress and the mainstream media are pushing. Persecution is on the horizon for anyone associated with conservatism. It is Orwellian.

Our nation has progressively become a moral cesspool and certainly warrants God’s judgment. America fits the description in Romans 1:

"For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools"

Judgment by abandonment…

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

So, I have been praying. Praying for a miracle. Praying for mercy. Praying as Jesus did in the garden:

"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass… nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

 Praying like Abraham… Genesis 18

Then Abraham drew near and said, "Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" And the Lord said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

God answered both those requests in the negative… but I still pray for mercy with children and grandchildren in mind.

I also know that we as believers have drifted away from the Lord and that he uses trials to draw us back to himself. This is a painful thing but in the long run, it bears much fruit… Job 36 puts it well:

"He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity."

And Psalm 25

Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.

If judgment comes it will begin with the church… 1 Peter 4

For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

May the Lord have mercy on us.

The Lord's Prayer

I don’t usually post my own thoughts or articles on this blog but I felt the need to do so today. Every morning I take a walk and listen to various messages that I’ve downloaded on my phone. As I was walking and listening, I was compelled to shut off the audio and pray what is referred to as the Lord’s prayer.

It seemed that this prayer took on crystal clear meaning to me in these chaotic times which I believe are about to become darker. Let me explain.

When I was young it was common to recite this prayer and I mostly did it without thinking too much of the words. I think many people today do the same thing. We’re told in the Word not pray with vain repetitions (Matthew 6:7). Many commentaries say that this prayer is just an example of how we should pray. It was not meant to be prayed repetitiously.

Be that as it may, the prayer is from our Lord. It’s a perfect prayer! It is succinct and covers all the main ingredients we need to worship and petition our God.

Our Father in heaven,
(we are talking to our Father… He is listening!)
Hallowed be Your name.
(Holy and revered is His name. Be worshipful and reverent not careless!)
Your kingdom come.
(Come Lord Jesus (Maranatha) and make your kingdom manifest on the earth)
Your will be done
(may your sovereign will be done in our own lives, the church,)
On earth as it is in heaven.
(and the whole world)
Give us this day our daily bread.
(The times may come when we will be needy. Please provide for our needs)
And forgive us our debts,
(We sin daily. Please forgive us.)
As we forgive our debtors.
(We instinctively want to repay evil for evil but the Word says repay evil with blessing. 1 Peter 3:9, Romans 12:17, 1 Thes. 5:15)
And do not lead us into temptation,
(Pray that God would spare us from testing and trials)
But deliver us from the evil one.
(and that He will put a hedge of protection around us from Satan. Job 1:10)
For Yours is the kingdom
(Many omit this doxology because it doesn’t appear in the earliest manuscripts)
and the power and the glory forever.
(but it’s a great paraphrase from 1 Chronicles 29:11)
Amen.
(So it is; so be it. Or, This is true.)
