"No doubt you've heard people say, once saved always saved. I've said that, because I believe it! But I don't believe it stands alone. Because while it is true to say that once a person is saved they are saved for all eternity, and I think we can go back to look at what Paul said in giving assurances in Romans 5 that salvation is in fact a one time and eternal thing. It is equally true that genuine salvation produces evidence that it is indeed genuine. The evidence is a fundamental change in the direction of life. Luther's classic statement is that we are saved by faith alone but not by faith that is alone. Genuine faith always gives evidence of conformity to the law of God.
